- oh, and coffee and dark chocolate!

now, come prosperity and peace to us all,
in every corner of the world!
(and let that champagne come to me!)

hugo chavez

kronikken finn du her!

bliss

suddenly, one of those days appeared out of nowhere.
now its gone - and it left me quite fascinated.
you know, one of those days that you fear.
one of those days I thought would be destructive, painful and long.
one of those days where the crisp autumn air surprises me by caressing my face as I walk into the morning.
one of those days where all small things seems to be in place.
one of those days where everyones eyes are so clear, and their skin so spotless.
one of those days where even the voice of the woman on the tram makes you feel so soft inside.
I feel all cottony, like I am floating through the day,
whilst everything around me is chaotic.
the day that was expected to be my enemy
all of a sudden became bliss...
if only it could have lasted.

privilege III

(ballard)
************************************************
travelling has become an illusionary escape from the unbearable boredom of middle class life...

can there be a relation between this quote and my crazy excitement for studying african civil wars, ethnicity, migration, conflict and peace...? ;)

its such a treat - my studies are fantastic! I really enjoy all the readings and some of the guest lecturers have been just grand! I feel so lucky! we have access to the PRIO library (its like a candy shop, sorry I sound like a nerd, but its true!), we read at the nobel institute and the national library, and I have never felt more inspired! my class mates are all fantastic people and I am so sad this semester is over, even tho the last 3 weeks of exams and essays have been way too hectic! however, last night we had a final julebord/tapas evening/out of control-party to celebrate ourselves and it was the perfect crazy-madness ending to these months!

but why must everything end when it starts to get really nice...? to all my friends in my class, and in the anu-class; you are all fabulous people and I wish we had more time together! luckily the ten of us from my class will go to south africa in january and spend another 1 1/2 year together, fighting about collier, new-barbarism theory, norways "charity-role" in the world, and most importantly, nicole will educate us on marxist theory and nice "radical shit" from the south! yahoo!

respect, my friends!

confusion

i am sitting here writing my final exam this semester.
the relationships between youth and conflict are supposed to be discussed and analysed.
actually, i have been thinking that the knowledge i have acquired these few months
makes me feel a whole lot wiser.
i have read and discussed political economy and conflict dynamics in africa' quite extensively'. (blahblah)

and just now, as i am drinking my yogi tea,
the little note on the end of the string of the tea bag reads:

'wisdom becomes knowledge when it becomes your personal experience'

i am confused.

1. i thought knowledge came first, then wisdom
2. well, that means i have to become african, live in a repressive neo-patrimonial state with a complex and crazy history, with no educational opportunities, no employment, no means of expressing myself politically, and i have to be between the age of 15 and 24.

shame.
knowledge? wisdom? live it? personal experience?
i am a white girl living in the ignorant north, i am way past 24 and i can educate myself to death. i will always get a job. i can go scream in the prime ministers face and vote for who ever i want. i think i am as far away as possible from the yogi tea wisdom (knowledge?).
i give up.

please give me a holiday and a bottle of dry cava.

the world has gone mental

i got an email yesterday.
it was feedback on my two latest essays.
i was quite excited.
and the email said my essays are very good.

but... it also said,
that my main problem is that i know too much!
the word 'problem' and 'know too much' should never appear in the same sentence?
(or, you might hear it if you live on sicily, you have been too nosy and you have a gun against your head..)

so, i am 'too knowledgeable', and that is an impediment for me writing better essays!

then i got an email today.
it said that 'the world is eating more than it is producing'.
first i laughed. loud. and then i got lots of funny pictures in my head.
then i started thinking...

not that i am scared of not getting food (ok, i am).
but the fact that people are actually sitting with their statistics,
making such conclusions.
which in turn will make fat, rich people freak out!

finally i did the mistake of listening (yup, listening) to the news on the tv this afternoon.
there, a lawyer managed to use the expression "ethnic nigerian tea".
'my client was not aware that there was marijuana in his "ethnic nigerian tea"', he stated.
can anyone explain the meaning of "ethnic nigerian tea" to me?

is there something fundamentally wrong with the world these days?
or am i the one going mental...?

escape

*from african renaissance to a very handsome little man i met at sognsvann!*

i must admit, its no joke for a farm-girl like me to move to the capital. its not that its big, really, however its red light, green light, aunty tram and uncle subway, stamp tickets here, walk there, get lost in the jungle... shake hands with the development minister, work out with famous norwegians at the gym. mind-expanding lectures... schedules... importance... identity... high heeled women with masks of make up... grønland... kebab... giardia... kaffebrenneriet... busy-busy-busy... and quite lovely!

my lovely friend martine said once, that all she wants is for me to fall in love with oslo. well - martine... many good memories are starting to pile up - i have had some wonderful months here, and my masters is really really great - and i like the sound of the tram, it makes me feel calm :) (when it sighs, not when it screams, mind you). so i guess - just as i start to feel at home, just as i start to love this place.. then i have to pack my bags again... yoh, this life. its quite wonderful in a bitter way!

i just want to share with you some of the moments from "marka" (the forest) a few weekends ago. my friends martine, nicole, christine and I jumped on the subway, and escaped city life with coffee and kvikk lunsj in our bags. lovely!

quote of the day - chissano

this years winner of filthy-rich-mo ibrahim's (very disputed) price for achievement in african leadership, former mozambiquan president joaquim chissano (now also filthy-rich) wins my heart with this quote:

“well, if the west is concerned about china’s human rights record [as a reason to deter increasing trade with africa], then perhaps african countries should reconsider trading with america because of their war in iraq and their torture of prisoners in guantanamo...”

standing applaus, chissano!
at least china is honest about what they are doing!

you can read more about the mo ibrahim price for achievement in african leadership

HERE (english)
and
HER (på norsk)

now u just have to wait for a more critical review of the price,
i'll be back! :*

(unfortunately - even if little charming mo ibrahim was waving this insane amount of money in the face of uncle bob of zimbabwe i doubt it would make him step down and go chill - like old and senile men should do...!)

picture of the day...

the mother...

wanna have some fun?

try the africa quiz here!

please feel free to leave your results as comments on this post ;)

and to our development/environment minister mr. solheim -
there are 54 countries in africa - not 55.
(some would argue 53 - if they love moroccan colonialism and deny the existence of western sahara.)
however I have no clue where you have 55 from.
maybe cause its so much fun to say femtifem?

(yes, justin, I know what you are thinking.
"what is this obsession with africa?"
I am just spreading the love of the mother -
as well as attempting to educate my peoples!)

quote of the day

"It is like allowing a giant to settle in your home. And what would you do if you find him with your wife?"

what we have

money doesn't matter - if you have them.
you don't care about the weather - if the weather is nice.
you don't know what you have until its gone...

the situation in zimbabwe is deteriorating by the day (and it already did when I was there in 2005 - so I cant even imagine how it is by now!).

but in south africa the braaiing must go on! (here we knew what we had before it was gone and we don't miss it!) a big applause to you mister tutu for calling the braai an institution and a grander applause for the national braaiday of south africa, 24th of september!

maybe its about time that mugabe is invited to a proper SA braai?
come on, bob;

"burn the past and cook up a succulent future"! :)

the show must go on...

trondheim - my favourite norwegian city.
my friend, it turned out to be a short, but very beautiful time.
I will miss you lots!

now I am living in oslo (ja, it happened pretty quickly!), on da westside (aoch!). I am slowly but surely trying to become friends with this busy place; red man-green man, quick-quick-quick... :)
my master studies are absolutely fab, I have a great&warm home and I will not regret my choice - it feels very right now that things are settling down.
however a big part of my heart will always belong to nidaros!

I never thought a "thing" could make me this happy! thoroughly, incredibly, truly, crazy happy! the happiness that makes me jump up and down, that makes me talk to the carrots and onions when I cook, that makes me feel cottony to the bone, that makes me smile to the grumpiest woman on the street! its like I am in love! and I am! and she is a lady!!

9th of august

9TH OF AUGUST

(better late then never...)

  • WOMEN'S DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA!

"On this day in 1956 some 20,000 women marched to the Union [government] Buildings in Pretoria to protest against a law requiring black women to carry passes. This day is celebrated as a reminder of the contribution made by women to society, the achievements that have been made for women's rights, and to acknowledge the difficulties and prejudices many women still face..."

happy women's day to the incredibly strong and beautiful women of south africa!

  • THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
"..in 1994 the UN's general assembly decided that 9th of august was to be the international day of the world's indigenous people - the goal was to strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development, by means of action-oriented programs and specific projects, increase technical assistance, and relevant standard-setting activities.." (www.un.org)

  • MY BIRTHDAY/THELMA&LOUISE!

not as important but still essential to me, 9th of august is also my birthday! I was spoiled at work with the best carrot cake ever (yes!) - thank you marthe - olden boble, fab coffee&dark chocolate - and even the birthday song! ;)

then my mom picked me up at work. I had no idea what was up, but I was very curious and excited for sure! as I got into the car, there were lots of presents! lovely things, creams and nice girly-stuff - and a really funny book called "hiv mannskjiten" (something like "throw out the kak"...)! it consists of gorgeous and funny pictures and stories from up north, of all the strange things people collect and the odd styles they have. hummer og kanari!

after lovely gourmet hot dog (!) at a gas station (its the national meal second after grandiosa pizza..) we ended up at selje. gorgeous, wild and green! they have a thalasso spa here - and I got a full body massage! jerre, I was in heaven!! :) after, being all fuzzy-wuzzy inside, I was served champagne in the garden, overlooking stadlandet, the wild sea and the gorgeous nature of selje. I truly felt like a blissful princess!

exploring selje and stad was next. we drove around, laughing at all the "hiv mannskjiten"-style places. taking pictures, having coffee. beautiful!

the gorgeous property of artist kjell-stig amdam..

at the viewpoint of vestkapp (western cape) the fog had taken over, so we did not see nothing. at all. barely each other! but it was quite an experience!

it's a long long way...

by the end of the road we found the little villlage of honningsvåg - spooky and with an energy of death. I was shit scared when I got out of the car to take pictures, and I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, despite its wild beauty right by the mad norwegian sea....

so we drove to nicer (however still spooky) places instead...

freedom

(bmw) touring the fjords

sunnmøre, the part of norway where I live, have a breathtaking nature and is world known for its deep fjords and steep mountains. the mountains are even called the "sunnmørs-alps" - stretching up to 17oo meters above sea level, rising straight up from the fjords. in the picture below, you should have been able to see the peak of slogen (in the middle of the picture, 1506 m.) but he is hiding under the clouds. respect to everyone who climbs that mountain - I will never even try!

take some time, enjoy the pictures one by one...

after many years telling them to come visit, sanna, stian and jan stian finaly came to check out my sunnmørske queendom - and how excited was I!? (johan, next time you come with as well!) here we are on the ferry from sæbø across to leknes, urke and øye, with geiranger as the final destination.

kor longt kjøme ej for dissa pengane? me ska på na hi sida!

we stopped at union øye hotel (from 1893) - right by the foot of slogen. take some time to look at the link, enjoy the intro, look at the details, read the history of the hotel as well as look at the pictures. its stunning!

union øye is such a delicate hotel. with old furniture, a million details, long hallways and creaking wooden stairs. and all the rooms are unique and are named by famous people who have stayed there during the last century. a young girl also haunts here - she worked at this hotel and drowned herself in the fjord from a broken heart. you can see her running in the right corner of the picture above (she stole sanna's clothing, left her naked and ran away!) and also in the picture below..

...perhaps the most coveted story is the one of Linda, the ghost. The saying goes that one of Kaiser William II's young officers fell in love with a mythically-beautiful young girl from the valley. But the two could not have each other. Now she wanders the hotel's "Blue Room." Guests who book room No. 7 are always handed a bowl of garlic to be placed in the room if no ghostly visit is wanted or outside the door if a meeting with Linda is what is desired. People from all over the world call to book the "Blue Room," and he assures them that Linda is a nice ghost. Whatever that means... "

a few years ago I stayed one night in this hotel myself, in this very room of queen silvia - one of the most beautiful rooms in the hotel, if you ask me! a wonderful experience! in the evening we sat in front of the fire in the cigar room listening to the hotel manager telling us stories from the hotels history....

then we drove to the lyngstøylvatnet (lake of lyngstøylen), where old pastures are lying visible under water - a rock slide in 1908 stopped the river and this lake came into being. trollish!

lyngstøylvatnet lies in the valley of norang - norangsdalen. its one of the wildest and most spectacular valleys in norway and even for someone born and raised at sunnmøre its breathtaking! and why not do a wee-wee or practice some boxing here?!

from norangsdalen we toured to hellesylt, and from there we took the ferry into the fjord of GEIRANGER (geirangerfjorden)!

geiranger is called the most beautiful place on earth. its described as having majestic green mountains, wild waterfalls and with the deep blue-greenish fjord being almost like a fairytale (som et ææææventyr!).

..enjoying the beauty of mother earth..

kjærstepar!

hugs livreim! nokon er glad i deg!
(remember the seat belt! someone loves you!)

geiranger - at the end of the fjord

grand cruise ships from all over the world come to geiranger- which is on the UNESCO world heritage list. this is costa magica. it can get pretty crowded in here!(yuk, all that smoke from the ships! pollution is one of the reasons why it has been threatened to be taken off that list).

coffee, cake and gossip - can it get any better, sanna? :)

heheh, look at this little fellow having his summer job charging money to drive up to dalsnibba (1504 moh) - from there one gets a spectacular view over geiranger and the fjord. we drove up there, some more excited than others (read; scared of heights..)! it was cold as a winters day, but stunning oh yes!

view over djupvatnet as we drive up

harahjerte?

spectacular!!

spread your wings and come fly!
